چکیده

When two or more humans communicate, nonverbal signals constitute between 60% and 90% of the meaning communicated. This means that vision is an integral part of the communication between humans. However, computer vision has not been used much in human-computer interaction yet. One reason for this is that functional computer vision systems are very difficult to construct. Even a seemingly simple task like the detection of a human face in an image is very difficult with computer vision in an arbitrary environment. In this paper, we describe a method for real-time face detection. This method was evaluated and the results show that five out of eight different faces were perfectly detected. After explaining the method we discuss the possibilities of using real-time computer vision in human-computer interaction and especially in kiosk interfaces.

Configuration of Human-facilitated Remote Service: a Vmc-based Kiosk Interface for Information Systems

Self-service is seen as effective, and thus, pervasive in all walks of human life, where crowds of people independently use public or private services offered by local kiosks, the Internet, or mobile devices. There is growing interest in delivering complex information-intensive interactive services via kiosks. This complicated service design, along with multiple choice interfaces, has diversifi...

Multimodal Speaker Detection Using Error Feedback Dynamic Bayesian Networks

Design and development of novel human-computer interfaces poses a challenging problem: actions and intentions of users have to be inferred from sequences of noisy and ambiguous multi-sensory data such as video and sound. Temporal fusion of multiple sensors has been efficiently formulated using dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) which allow the power of statistical inference and learning to be com...

Integrated Task and Data Parallel Support for Dynamic Applications

There is an emerging class of real-time interactive applications that require the dynamic integration of task and data parallelism. An example is the Smart Kiosk, a free-standing computer device that provides information and entertainment to people in public spaces. The kiosk interface is computationally demanding: It employs vision and speech sensing and an animated graphical talking face for ...

User evaluation of the mask kiosk

In this paper we report on a series of user trials carried out to assess the performance and usability of the MASK prototype kiosk. The aim of the ESPRIT Multimodal Multimedia Service Kiosk (MASK) project was to pave the way for more advanced public service applications with user interfaces employing multimodal, multi-media input and output. The prototype kiosk, was developed after analysis of ...
